I purchased this product at a woodworkers show in my hometown after reading the positive reviews on Amazon. The customers were right. This truly is an amazing tool. I am a hobbyist, so I can't comment on longevity over years of continuous cutting, but I have been really please so far (4 months of use). It is accurate, versatile, very stable and true on 90 degree and angled cuts. It fits nicely into the box after use and cleans easily. I was going to try and go the cheep route by buying some router bits to cut grooves for biscuits, but I'm glad I splurged and bought it. Tons of uses so far. Edge to edge gluing as well as box construction. Nice work Porter-Cable.
I've used this tool on quite a few projects now. It has performed flawlessly. I have nothing negative to say about this joiner. I'm glad I read other reviews before making the purchase.
I had one of these. It is good enough for case work like kitchen cabinets but not accurate enough for joining stiles and rails or furniture work. The blade alignment of mine was tilted about 1/64" from one side to the other.
This is very well made. I like the adjustment features. When doing horizontal cuts, I installed the guide because the torque will cause the joiner to jump offline. I am very happy with this product!
The second day I owned the Porter-Cable Plate Joiner, the blade change screw became stuck. I tried WD40 and an extension on the Allen wrench that came with the joiner. The Allen wrence broke. I took the joiner to the local warranty repair facility. They were also unable to remove the blade. In fact, they damaged the retaining screw and the blade while trying to fix it. I had to leave the joiner with them for a week for repair. So I did not have use of the tool during the first week I owned it. On the good side, the repair was free and joiner does a good job.
You can really feel the quality of this thing when you take it out of the case the first time. Surfaces are machined very precisely and it has a good weight. Creating pockets in birch plywood and MDF is so smooth it almost feels like like cutting through butter.
My only gripe is that it appears the blade isn't perfectly centered to cut a pocket in the middle of 3/4" stock. If both the wood and the tool are resting on a bench, the hole seems to be about 1/32" too high. This really isn't a problem as long as you note to cut both pieces you're joining from the same direction so that the 1/32" offset lines up -- otherwise they'll multiply and your piece could be off by double that! You can use the fence and adjust it to center perfectly, but then both the work piece and the tool need to be hanging off the edge of the table.
This kit doesn't include any biscuits so make sure you pick some up at the same time.
I tend to not write reviews when I first buy tools, I wait a while until the "new" wears off and I have a chance to see the warts under the shine.
I have had mine for several years and gone through a couple of thousand biscuts, (literally, I'm on the fourth box of a thousand).
The fence is accurate, and is the only one that lets you set it to 135-degrees, a good feature if you want to use biscuts in a long mitered edge of a cabinet. It lets you reference the biscut, and thus alignment, to the outside face, which is the one that shows.
The machine is still tight and accurate even after years of use.
I have always used it with the dust collection hose hooked up, and have had a few problems with chips clogging up. But, most of the competitive models don't have any dust hook up at all, so even with it's occasional clogging it is still a plus.
It is one of the only joiners that will do face frames, and that was one of the features that led to my purchasing it.
If it breaks tomorrow morning, I'll have another on order by lunch.
bought it and love it, works perfect. friend is always borrowing it needs to get his own.
Never used one before but this was simple, exact and on target. Best price too.
I've had this tool for about 9 months now, and I've used it many times, mostly for attaching face frames to cabinets, and it has always worked great.
I've also used it to join many face frame corners, both at 90 and 45 degrees, and the results are always amazing, especially when I use my jointer to straighten the edges first.
The planer does have a little kick to it when you turn it on, but I haven't had any problem keeping it in place when it starts due to the grit on the face of the machine.
The one complaint that I've seen others mention is that of the dust collector, and I use to have problems with this too. I made an adapter to connect it to my shopvac, and that worked good, but it's a little bit of a hassle dragging the hose around. Now I've just been using the bag by itself and it's been working just fine for me. What I've found is that all I need to do is to give it a second or two to come up to speed, which will fill the bag with air, before I make my cut, then the cuttings all go into the bag. If I go too fast it can clog.
